Description
1960 oil on board by Adomas Varnas (1879-1979). Signed by artist. Measures approx. 15" x 18 3/4" OA9 1/2" x 13 1/4" SS. Born in Lithuania, Varnas was a prominent Lithuanian painter, photographer, collector, philanthropist, and educator. He studied art at St. Petersburg, Russia and Cracow, Poland; and, taught art at Voronezh, Russia and in Lithuania's Vytautas the Great school, Kaunas Art School, State Art Institute. His paintings represent realistic objects with somewhat slight touch of impressionism. Varnas fled Lithuania to Germany during World War II, and came to the United States in 1949 where he lived until his death. Artwork has not been removed from frame for inspection.
