An Egyptian bronze plaque probably from a vase with an inscription of the cartouche of Ramesses II. New Kingdom cartouches typically contained the royal names of pharaohs, queens, and other prominent figures. These names were written in hieroglyphic script, which consisted of a combination of pictorial symbols and phonetic signs. The cartouche functioned as a visual marker, emphasising the significance and divine authority of the individual whose name it contained. For similar see: MET Museum Accession Number: 10.130.1012.
