Description
Ca. AD 150 - 300.
A Roman silver ring with a wide band, ridges in the exterior rising up in three flutes on the shoulders. The elongated oval bezel is engraved with two dressed figures. In the Roman Republican period, jewellery was reserved for the aristocrats only, with the exception of a few wealthy merchants. With the advent of the empire and especially after the Augustan period, due to both an extremely prosperous economy and to the Mediterranean routes under the strict control of Roman fleets, wealth and prosperity spread even to the lower classes of society. During this period, myriads of high and low-level workshops sprang up in Rome and throughout Italy. The main recipients of these jewels were the Roman legionaries who attributed the most diverse meanings to them depending on what was represented in the bezel. These rings often came from the state directly as payment or as an assignment of a new position in the army. Their function was also as a personal seal to send letters or to guarantee the quality and quantity of products. For similar see: El Legado the Hefesto n. 489.
Size: D:21.18mm / US: 11 5/8 / UK: X; Weight: 55g
Provenance: Private UK collection; From an old London collection formed in the 1990s.
