David Brooks, hailing from the Mi’kmaq First Nation, was born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada, specifically in Indian Brook First Nation, where he spent the majority of his life with his family.

During his early adulthood, he embarked on travels and lived in various locations across Canada and the United States. It was in 1983 that David delved into the world of painting when he encountered Phillip Young in Toronto. From Phillip, he acquired foundational painting techniques.

David once expressed, "When I engage in painting, it serves as much for others as it does for myself. I aspire for my artworks to emanate a sense of strength for our people. In my creative process, I strive to connect with the distant past when our community was resilient, seeking ways to express that strength for contemporary individuals. I refrain from initiating a painting until I've grasped its intended significance. By tapping into the strength of our history, I believe we can surmount present challenges. My hope is that my paintings can offer a pathway to the future."
