George Edwards Hering (British, 1805-1879) Oil on Canvas 1840-1860, "Constantinople from the Golden Horn", H 12.5" W 20.5" | a view of the Hagia Sophia from the Golden Horn during the Ottoman Empire. a fisherman is repairing a sail in the foreground while the Skyline of Constantinople is in the distance. the view predates the building of the Galata bridge which currently spans the Golden Horn. Signed lower left 'G.E. Hering". Period frames measure H 23.5" X W 32". 95 entries on ArtNet. Provenance: Property of a Grosse Pointe Park, MI private collector.
Condition
When viewed under UV light, small area of overpainting in the extreme lower right edge. Stretcher impressions. Rubbing with some pigment loss at the edges where the canvas meets the frame.
