Description
Five candle roycroft-style chandelier. Circa: 1920. Condition: Excellent. Finish: Original. Country of origin: USA. 5 candelabra sockets. 26.5" tall x 16" diameter Inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement in late 19th century England, writer Elbert Hubbard started the Roycroft community in East Aurora, New York to foster a sense of harmony between designer and craftsman. The campus was designed after medieval guilds, where artisans of all trades could come together to collaborate, eventually becoming the a leader in the American Arts & Crafts movement. Today, it is the best preserved and most complete complex of buildings remaining of the guilds from the turn of the 20th century, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. "Roycrofters" still work there, and are assessed annually to ensure continued excellence and growth in their craft. They earn Master Artisan status and the use of the revered double "R" mark on their work if they exhibit high quality hand-craftsmanship, excellence in design, continuing artistic growth, originality of expression, and professional recognition.
