Toronto, Canada. C. 1891. Paper. This is a Conservative Party of Canada election poster lithograph portraying Liberal politician Richard John Cartwright (1835 - 1912) as a slave trader seeking to sell away Canadian assets to US influence. An excellent example of early Canadian political muckraking and fear-mongering being employed to warn against the dangers of free trade with the United States, portrayed here as a rather devious version of Uncle Sam. Marked, "Published by the Industrial League, Frederic Nicholls, Hon. Sec.", in bottom margin, "Toronto Lith Co", at bottom-right. Sight: 26.5" x 39.75". Frame: 36.25" x 49.5" x 1.5".
