Robert Burns interest – A George IV Scottish sterling silver mounted wood quaich, Glasgow 1823 or 24 by Peter Aitken I
The mounts engraved “the oak of which this cup is made composed part of the roof of Alloway Kirk”, then lines from Robert Burns’s Tam o’ Shanter. Together with an Elizabeth II paten, London 1955 by Edgar Ernest Davis. (2)
Quaich length – 11 cm / 4.3 inches
Alloway Auld Kirk, a 16th-century church was already a ruin by Burns’s time. Burns chose the kirk’s weathered gable-end as the spot where Tam first spies the capering witches and warlocks who subsequently give him chase.
