Description
Monumental antique pastel on paper entitled Geraniums by American artist George Gibbs. This original artwork was used as a magazine illustration two years prior to its exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1907. It depicts a smartly dressed Victorian lady in a garden's alley where she has stopped midway from her task to look at the viewer. This immediacy is emphasized by the empty clay pots and the red and pink geraniums that she has already planted. Signature on lower right: George Gibbs. Housed in a gilded frame. Artwork dimensions: 22"L x 33"H. Frame size: 26.25"L x 37"H x 2"W. Three stickers on verso: Henry M. Taws Artists' and Designers' Supplies Philadelphia, Penna; a short biography and citations on George Gibbs, and an official sticker from the Fourth Annual Philadelphia Water Color Exhibition, 1907.
