George Wilson, Penrith - A late 19th century 18ct gold half hunter pocket watch, circa 1873, outer cover with blue enamel Roman numerals and inner chemin de fer chapter ring around the circular glazed aperture, white dial with black Roman numerals, blued hands and subsidiary seconds register at 6H, front loading gilt three-quarter plate key wind movement signed GEORGE WILSON PENRITH No. 4979 with chain fusée and three threaded cotton reel pillars, case, 47mm diameter, interior with London hallmarks for 18ct gold, 85.3g gross, presented with the winding key George Wilson founded his Penrith business in 1850, but had originally been in business as a jeweller and watchmaker at Appleby, about 15 miles to the east. He is listed in Brian Loomes' "Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World" as a jeweller and watchmaker, Penrith, Cumbria,1869-1879.
