This study is a preparatory drawing for the decoration in Palazzo della Porta in Udine. Although the figure of Latona is very similar in the finished fresco, Quaglia has made changes to two of the frogs in the final work. The attribution was confirmed by Aldo Rizzi, according to the 1966 catalogue.

Terence Mullaly (1927-2020) was an art historian, journalist, lecturer and broadcaster who specialised in Italian art with a particular interest in the Veronese and Venetian schools, but whose collecting taste was wide-ranging. He was art critic for the Daily Telegraph 1958-1986 as well as contributing to Apollo and Burlington Magazine.
