Raymond Moretti (French, 1931-2005) color lithograph on Arches paper, from the Jazz series 1983, pencil signed lower right, un-numbered.
Moretti's work always had a close association with Jazz music, he painted his first important work to the sound of Count Basie playing on a hand-wound phonograph. Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Thelonious Monk all posed for him. Moretti created original album cover artwork for a number of Jazz albums on the Verve label in the 1960s.
In 1983 he created a series of 12 Jazz inspired illustrations to illustrate the Jazz Folio featuring a poem by Claude Nougaro with collaboration by Michel Legrand and Daniel Filipacchi and original folio of text by Frank Tenet. Some of these illustrations were also released as larger limited edition lithographs.
