Description
A French terracotta plaque circa 1790 titled "Serpent d'Airain," depicting the Israelites in front of an image of a Bronze Serpent (aka Nehushtan) on a pole that God instructed Moses to build to heal the Israelites from lethal snake bites from snakes sent by God as punishment for speaking out against him. This story is found in the Bible in the Book of Numbers, Chapter 21, Verses 4-9. The plaque was cast, most likely from a bronze mold, and features hand-detailing. A hole at the top of the plaque holds a string in order for it to be hung. Artist unknown.
