Antique Glass Beaded Snake Necklace, 18'5". This snake necklace is believed to be from the early 1900's, possibly Wiener Werkstätte beadwork, and its production dates to around 1910, Vienna Austria. This is made of glass micro beads, meticulously threaded together to create a charming green snake. The sname has has yellow spots running down its length, a yellow ring around its neck. As is common with snakes, its underbelly is white, a different color than above. On the underside of its head is a pretty, green outlined, yellow triangle. Both yellow eye beads are present. It has metal pointed hinged teeth. You squees his head and ahe will clamp down on his tail to create the necklace. The snake is 18.5" long. His underside is white and under his bottom jaw there is a green triangular design. I do not know for certain that this is Wiener Werkstatte but I beileve it is - the only thing is - it does not have the longer beaded accent attached to the tail and nor do I see where it was removed. I read the description from a known Wierner piece and it matched this snake exactly other than the beaded accent. Other research also found a similar snake without the extra beads at the tail but slightly shorter and not as much of a match as the possibly Wiener piece - listed these types of snakes as an interpretation of the WWI-era Ottoman trench art snakes that you will often see on the market, the hallmark being the clamped mouth. Prices ranged from $425 to over $700.00. There are more modern ones with metal heads, etc., but this snake is definitely over 100 years or approaching it. It is in very good condition. The mouth in this snake is a silver tone teeth design and not brass. There are no markings. (W11222/5X5 SS9070 J LD 12/17/22).
