An intriguing modern lithograph on paper titled "The Patriarch (Oedipus at Colonus)" by Leonard Baskin. Signed on the bottom right with an annotation of 87/160. Baskin was known for his portrait series of various famous artists and intellects. Oedipus at Colonus is the last of the three Theban plays of the Athenian tragedian Sophocles. An example of this print is in the permanent collection in the National Gallery of Art. Dimensions: 36.25"h x 26.25"w x 1.25"d (framed). Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was an American sculptor, draughtsman, and graphic artist, as well as founder of the Gehenna Press. Called a Sculptor of Stark Memorials by the New York Times, Baskin is also known for his wood, limestone, bronze, and large-scale woodblock prints, which ranged from naturalistic to fanciful, and were frequently grotesque, featuring bloated figures or humans merging with animals. His monumental bronze sculpture, The Funeral Cortege, graces the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C. Baskin's work is held by major museums worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the British Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Whitney Museum of American Art.
