Description
An Abstract Expressionist lithograph in colors on TGL handmade paper titled "Black with No Way Out, from El Negro" by postwar artist Robert Motherwell. Printed by Roger Campbell, Lee Funderburg & Kenneth Tyler. Catalog: RM 57; TGL 438; Belknap 289; Walker 308.20. "El Negro" was a collaboration between Rafeal Alberti and Robert Motherwell. It included nineteen original lithographs to create a visual to the poetry with lines from Rafael Alberti's poem "Negro Motherwell, 1980." A lyrical expression of black and gray splatters on a white background with a small pop of emerging red on the top right. A composition with a sophisticated balance which Motherwell is known for. Rafael Alberti was a Spanish poet and is considered one of the greatest literary figures of the so-called Silver Age of Spanish Literature, which makes this an interesting collaboration with Motherwell who is one of the most influential Abstract Expressionist artists in the 20th century. Dimensions: 30.25"h x 52.25"w x 1.5"d (framed) / 15"h x 37.75"w (unframed). In excellent condition. Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) was part of the New York School in the late 1940's and coined the term for the group of Abstract Expressionist artists working together in Manhattan such as Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Motherwell's first one-man show was at Peggy Guggenheim in 1944 and in the same year the MoMA was the first museum to purchase one of his paintings. In the 1950's he taught painting and his teachings influenced Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, and Kenneth Noland. He was also married to Helen Frankenthaler. Motherwell has been featured in several exhibitions at major museums globally. In recent years, Motherwell paintings have reached auction records up to $11 million.
