Item Details
Description
A vibrant contemporary abstract three-dimensional lithograph on paper titled "Jazz" by American artist Elizabeth Murray. Hand signed in pencil on the bottom right with a 2001 date and annotation of 38/46. In this artwork, the artist revisits one of her favorite subjects, a runaway teacup. Murray has been remarked on how important jazz is to her. We can almost sense the beat in the syncopated colors of this shattered cup, its bright handles gyrating and dancing with abandon. Behind the cup, a coltish pink table does a jig of its own, slayed legs swinging hither and thither. Like the improvisational riffs between jazz musicians, Murray's protagonists and unpredictable colors push and pull against each other. The image pops off the wall both figuratively and literally. Elizabth Murray (1940- ) was born in Chicago and her art recalls the funky movements and raucous colors of earlier Chicago artists. At the time, when the dominant New York styles were cool and impersonal, artists in the Midwest and California embraced humor and confrontation. Beginning in the 1970s, Murray became well known for hybrid canvases that blurred the line between painting and sculpture. She has created one of contemporary art's most significant bodies of prints, which was recognized with a mid-career retrospective in Tokyo and traveling to museums throughout the United States in 1990-92. Elizabeth Murray's work is collected by major contemporary public museums in the United States, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art in New York to name a few. From a private collection. Dimensions: 38"h x 42"w x 3"d (framed, no glass). In excellent vintage condition.
