Description
Louis XVI Style Gilt-Metal-Mounted Mahogany Bureau Plat, Maison Millet, Paris, Circa 1890. The rectangular brass-bound top inset with a tooled green leather panel, fitted with a frieze drawer flanked on one side by a writing drawer simulating two drawers, fitted with four compartments and a cover sliding over a vacant compartment, and on the other side with two working drawers, the central drawer applied with fluted and foliate scrolls with flowerhead terminals, the drawers flanked by floral pendants, the back outlined with gilt-metal borders and with corner floral pendants, raised on circular stop-fluted legs with bellflower and berry mounts, on cuffed feet, printed under the top "MILLET/ FABRICANT/ DE/ MEUBLES a BRONZES d'ART/ PARIS/ 50 Rue Salne Sabin" within an oval.H: 29.25 in., W: 47.5 in., D: 25.625 in.Maison Millet was founded by Blaise Millet in 1853, and continued by his son Theodore until 1902 from 11 rue Jacques-Coeur, Paris, when it relocated to 23, Boulevard Beaumarchais. The company not only reproduced eighteenth century Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture, but also furniture in the new modern styles such as Art Nouveau. The firm also copied pieces held in the National Collections, with many examples winning honors at national and international exhibitions in London and Paris, such as the gold medal in the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle, the Grand Prix the following year, as well as three Diplomes d' Honneur and four gold medals. Maison Millet closed in 1918.
