Description
Federal Style Cherry and Inlaid Whitewood Stand, Donald A. Dunlap, Antrim, New Hampshire, 1990. The octagonal top with a diamond-shaped scored basketweave inlay, tilting above a vase-shaped standard, raised on downswept legs ending in spade feet, signed and dated in pencil under the top "Donald A. Dunlap/ Cabinetmaker/ Antrim NH/ 1990."H: 27.625 in., W: 21 in., D: 15.75 in.Literature: This stand is discussed and illustrated in Philip Zea and Donald Dunlap, "The Dunlap Cabinetmakers: A Tradition in Craftsmanship," pp. 73-77.The Dunlap family of cabinetmakers from the Merrimack Valley region originated with Major John Dunlap (1746-1792), who worked in Goffstown and Bedford, New Hampshire in the 1760s. Over the next decade he trained many apprentices, journeymen and family members, including his brother Lieutenant Samuel Dunlap. Subsequent generations of Dunlap family cabinetmakers continued in the tradition of making distinctive New Hampshire furniture, influenced by designs brought to this country by Scotch-Irish immigrants. Born in Antrim, New Hampshire, Donald A. Dunlap (1934-2019) was in the grocery business during his professional career; however, his true passion was woodworking and making furniture. For about 40 years he carried on the Scotch-Irish influence with designs such as basketweave, dentil moldings, “floward og” (flowered ogee) moldings, fans, spoon handle plumes, S-scrolls and typical skirt profiles. He combined these mid-eighteenth century elements with the development of different methods of construction and design, along with the use of modern tools, to create an original style of his own.
