Pair of English 12- Inch Celestial and Terrestrial Table Globes on Mahogany Stands, London, John and William Cary, Circa 1816 and George and John Cary, Circa 1825. The celestial globe depicting constellations as birds, animals, Greek mythological figures and scientific instruments, brass meridian circle, horizon band engraved on paper with calendar and Zodiac, printed in the rectangular cartouche "CARY'S / NEW CELESTIAL GLOBE../ ON WHICH/ are correctly laid down upwards of 3500 Stars/ Selected from the most accurate observations/ and calculated for the Year 1800./ With the extent of each Constellation precisely defined/ By Mr. GILPIN of the ROYAL SOCIETY," and ""Made and Sold by J. & W. Cary, Strand London Jany. 1 1816;" the terrestrial globe printed in the circular cartouche "TERRESTRIAL GLOBE/ DELINEATED/ From the Best Authorities extant/ Exhibiting the late Discoveries towards the/ NORTH POLE/ and every improvement in Geography/ to the present Time/ LONDON;" and "Made and Sold by G. & J. CARY, 86 St. James's Street Jany 1825," each horizon band mounted on four curved uprights issuing from a ring-turned standard, raised on cabriole legs ending in snake feet, each joined by a medial compass stretcher with engraved paper compass and needle, the terrestrial under glass.H: 24.5 and 25 in.Provenance: Property from the Collection of Cortlandt and Nancy Knowles Parker, descendants of William Gray (a Salem merchant and Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts), Jonathan and Susannah Powell Mason, Patrick and Anna Powell Mason Grant, Morris Gray (President of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1914-24) and Flora Grant Gray, and Major-General Cortlandt and Elizabeth Gray Parker. Spanning multiple styles and periods across the categories of furniture, fine and decorative arts, the collection has been housed in the family home, Greenvale Farm Estate and Vineyard, Portsmouth, Rhode Island, for six generations. Boston China Trade merchant John Sargent Barstow purchased 53 acres of land on the Sakonnet River during the early 1860’s and hired the prominent Boston architect John Hubbard Sturgis to design the main house, stable and barn. The historic Stick style home with Gothic elements was constructed from 1864 to 1865 by Edmond Coggeshall of Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
