Description
"City of Rome," British Woolwork "Woolie," Late Nineteenth Century. Worked in wool threads with a view of the ship with three funnels and four masts, stitched "CITY OF ROME" on the bow, flying the Union Jack and an anchor flag, and with two ships in the foreground; housed in a maple frame. Frame: H: 26.25 in., W: 33.25 in., D: 2.125 in. "City of Rome" was a British ocean liner, designed by William John and built for the Inman Line by the Barrow Ship Building Company. She was launched June 14, 1881. Built of iron throughout, the ship was 560 feet long, 52 1/4 feet wide, 37 feet deep and 8,144 tons. She was fitted with three funnels and four masts. In 1882 she was sold to the Barrow Steam Ship Company, Ltd., operated by Anchor Steamship Line, but retained her original name. "City of Rome" was scrapped in Germany in 1902.
