Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy's Copeland & Garrett Platter, 1833-47. The blue rim molded with four white floral sprays, reserved at the top with the initials "JJ" in gold within an oval ruffle and scroll-edge cartouche, impressed "COPELANDS GARRETT," printed "COPELAND GARRETT/ LATE SPODE" factory marks. H: 13.125 in., W: 16.75 in., D: 1.375 in. According to the consignor, this platter belonged to Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy (1783-1859). Born in Bombay, Jejeebjoy was an Indian-Parsi merchant and philanthropist. By 1814, his cooperation with the British East India Company had earned him large profits, enough to enable him to purchase his first ship, the "Good Success," later adding six more ships to his fleet. An enterprising merchant, he became very wealthy carrying cotton and opium to China. In 1818, he formed "Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy & Co." along with two associates. He enjoyed a long trading partnership with Jardine Matheson & Co. in Canton.
