Description
European School 19th Century John the Baptist Rebuking Herod Oil on canvas Biblical Scene set in Antique Giltwood Frame - Oil is 43" x 32" ; framed is 53" x 42" This scene is based on various ancient sources, including Luke 3:19-20: "But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother Phillip's wife, and all the other evil things he had done, Herod put John in prison." Here Herodias is shown standing next to the enthroned Herod, while seated at her feet is her daughter, Salome, who has apparently been entertaining them by playing a harp. This reference to music is clearly intended to foreshadow Salome's seductive dance at Herod's feast, which will ultimately persuade him to have John beheaded - Repaired vertical jagged tear in the sky (roughly 4 inches long) in the upper left quadrant. A few touches of restoration elsewhere. Some lines and shdows reinforced.
