Description
Early oil on canvas by American artist Willis Henry Plummer (1838-1935). Depicting a brook trout after a fly, the painting is still housed in its original oak frame, measuring 25 1/2" x 21 1/2" overall, with Plummer's signature appearing in black at the bottom left. Most likely dating from the late 1800's, the reverse of the stretcher (20" x 16") and the canvas both have small "W. H. PLUMMER SO. LAWRENCE" stampings, most likely referring to Lawrence, Massachusetts or possibly the South Lawrence Railroad Station. The painting's surface exhibits minor wear/crazing and is a bit dirty, the reverse of the canvas with scattered age spots and the partial paper backing torn and fragile. Plummer's trout themed paintings are rarely offered for sale.
