Description
Dating from 1915, this exact Woggle-Bug and box appear on page 65 of "The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones". The 4 3/4" x 1 1/2" picture box is very rare, with clear illustrations of the lure and "Pat. Appl'd For" printed on the top label, otherwise unmarked. The bait is finished in white with yellow chin, complete with all three hooks and the twin metal spring clips in the belly slots. Except for a factory imperfection the lure grades shiny Ex-/Ex, the correct box would also be Ex-/Ex, if not for a tear on the label, which appears to be completely present, just folded and attached to the neighboring section (with the original label glue) - a professional restoration would be warranted. We are unaware of another Woggle-Bug in this vivid color and the box is one of scant few surviving.
From the Sheridan Jones Collection.
Referred to as "America's pioneering outdoor writer", Sheridan Jones (1881-1958) was certainly one of the most respected and prolific angling writers of his era. Many of the lures offered in this auction, where noted, were personally owned by Jones. Several were given to the esteemed author and outdoor writer for his professional opinion, others as gifts by lure makers vying for his favor. Stated best by author Joseph Hilko in his 2010 book The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones: "Jones' legacy as an educator, naturalist, professional writer and world-class angler is worthy of remembrance today".
