Description
Extremely rare, believed to have been made as a test bait for the outdoor writer Sheridan Jones in 1918. Measuring a full 5 3/8" in length and featuring Jamison's signature metal "wings", double line ties, removable Japanned double hooks, belly/tail cup hardware, finished in red head white, about VG+ due to chipping around the nose screw, an old thin over-varnish and bleedthrough, possibly unfished. Coming in its original 6" 2pc box, with the top label intentionally left off to allow for handwritten notes about the lure for Jones: "Jamison's Weedless Winged Muskellunge Mascot Wobbler Dives Floats Deep Water or Surface Treble Hook on Request - Price $1.00". Other than factory written notes in place of the label, the box grades about Ex- (one separated bottom corner), and includes the Sheridan R. Jones collection stamp on the interior of the lid. This exact combination is pictured in "The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones" on page 63. Only a scant few of these large early Mascots are known to exist.
From the Sheridan Jones Collection.
Referred to as "America's pioneering outdoor writer", Sheridan Jones (1881-1958) was certainly one of the most respected and prolific angling writers of his era. Many of the lures offered in this auction, where noted, were personally owned by Jones. Several were given to the esteemed author and outdoor writer for his professional opinion, others as gifts by lure makers vying for his favor. Stated best by author Joseph Hilko in his 2010 book The Life and Legend of Sheridan R. Jones: "Jones' legacy as an educator, naturalist, professional writer and world-class angler is worthy of remembrance today".
