Description
A Fine French Bronze and Marble Military Inkwell, Susse Freres
France, early 20th century, a well detailed and finely cast desk inkwell (encrier). The 20" wide base or shaped green mottled marble, supporting a soldier carrying a saddle/bag, sword, and gun, sculpted by Charles Edouard Richefeu (1868-1945) and dated 1915. The pair of inkpots with stylized cannons on the top sculpted by Octave George Lelievre (1838-1919). The sculptures also bearing the Susse Freres foundry marks. Overall dimensions, 20" wide, 8 1/2" deep, 11 1/2" tall; 29 pounds.
Noting that the inkwell is in overall remarkable condition considering its age. There are no missing parts to the figure, the gun/sword/saddle stirrups in very good condition. Inkpot retain glass liners. There are a few scattered nicks to the marble base
