Framed hand written letter (likely by his secretary) and signed by William H. Seward, Secretary State on December 31, 1863 and reading "The President will receive the Heads of Departments and their families tomorrow morning, January 1st at eleven o'clock.", Seward (1801-1872) served as U.S. Secretary of State 1861-1869 serving Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, Governor of New York 1839-1842, U.S. Senator 1849-1861, survived, after being stabbed five times, the April 14, 1865 attack by John Wilkes Booth's fellow conspirator Lewis Powell, and negotiated what was known as "Seward's Folly", the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7 million dollars, for shipping frame is 13.75"h, 17.75"w, .75"d, 2.60lbs
