About the artist: (1840-1917) - Russian artist, author of portraits, genre and historical paintings, as well as monumental mosaic panels. Pelevin is better known as a painter, and in 1869-1870, at the beginning of his career, he worked at St. Isaac's Cathedral.
Ivan Andreevich was a romantic and patriot of his time, who combined in his work the traditions of realistic painting and the subtle lyricism of the everyday writer. The paintings of I.A.Pelevin are narrative in nature, reveal to us everyday life stories, presenting us with vivid types of the era: peasants, landowners, merchants, children, hunters, fishermen.
The name of Ivan Andreevich Pelevin is one of the central in the galaxy of genre painters of the late 19th century. In his works, he emotionally and historically accurately showed the Russian peasant life, linking this with his sincere attitude to what he wrote about.
I. A. Pelevin was born in 1840 in St. Petersburg, and in 1856 he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts. He received his first small silver medal in 1861, having performed a sketch from nature. After completing the course, he became a class artist of the third degree (1864).
His paintings "The Seamstress" and "Reading the Newspaper", presented to the examination committee, already then felt an interest in the realistic genre theme, which at that time occupied a leading place in the work of Russian artists. In the painting "The Widow", written by the artist in 1866, tragic notes are strong, he especially sharply conveys the despair of his heroine. Grief and worries broke the spirit of a young girl who sat down in the cradle with a child. In a limply thrown back hand a letter with the terrible news of the death of her husband on the battlefield. A photograph of him in an officer's uniform is on the table. The details in the picture are very significant. It is they who help to reveal the essence of the plot.
In 1868, I. Pelevin continued his studies at the Academy, entering the workshop of mosaicists, a year later he received the title of academician of genre painting. In 1874 I.A.Pelevin moved to Lithuania. The first creative decade was associated with work on a historical theme. He was especially worried about such images as Ivan the Terrible and Princess Sophia.
By the mid-1880s, he again returned to stories about the peasant life. The artist's paintings are especially touching, scenes depicting children. The painting "Children in a Sleigh" (1870) in its mood and subject matter resembles the paintings of V.G. Perov. Compassion for orphanhood is especially poignant and acutely conveys the spirit of the times. In the painting "The Firstborn" (1888), the artist reveals the theme of motherhood, depicting a young mother wrapping her child in a bright, colorful veil. A woman sits by the stove in front of the window, sunlight plays on her clothes and face with glare. The work is especially picturesque and expressive in color, the composition is balanced.
Feeding a Child also presents us with a scene in a rural hut, as if drawing the mood of the characters. The most characteristic motif in the work of I.A.Pelevin was the image of peasant children against the background of a spike field, walking in a meadow or standing on a forest path. The images attract the viewer with their spontaneity and liveliness of characters. The color scheme of the paintings is based on a subtle harmony of ocher and silvery gray tones.
I. A. Pelevin's paintings are of great artistic and collection value, they are kept in museum collections and private collections in Russia and abroad.
