Item Details
Description
An engraved naval commemorative rummer, circa 1798-1805
Commemorating the battles of the Glorious First of June, St Vincent, Camperdown and the Nile, the ovoid bowl with two shields bearing fouled anchors and two paterae suspended between drapery, the rim inscribed 'LD HOWE'S JUNE 1st 1794', 'LD ST VINCENT'S FEBY 14th 1797', 'LD DUNCAN'S OCTR 11th 1797', and 'LD NELSON'S AUGT 3rd 1798', on a short plain stem and square 'lemon squeezer' foot, 14cm high
Footnotes:
An inventory of 'Plate China Glass &c belonging to Lady Hamilton' was drawn up circa 1813 when Emma desperately needed money. This lists many items of glass and china that had been used by Nelson and Emma to entertain at their Merton home. The list of glass included...

9 wine and 2 liquor glasses with names on them
5 Common Cut Ditto
11 Ale Ditto with name engraved
6 Rummers with Ditto

The pattern used on this rummer and on lots 85, 86 and 87 in this sale was clearly a popular way to commemorate naval victories, and it is highly likely that Nelson would have been presented with rummers and tumblers with similar designs. The pattern on such glasses was ideally suited to use at Merton to accompany the 'Baltic Set' of porcelain and creamware that is well represented in this sale.
Condition
In good condition save for a typical tiny flake-chip underneath one corner of the foot which can be felt and viewed with the aid of a lens, but is of little significance. There is typical wear underneath the foot as expected where this glass has been standing.
