Description
An "Enigma G" cipher machine from the German Intelligence Service (Abwehr), number "G 193", complete with wooden caseThe rarest Enigma model in good, untouched condition. The crank to rotate the mechanism backwards in the lid, below the spare lamp panel. Serial number "G 193" on the back. The housing covered in black craquelure lacquer, with screw-mounted lamp panel cover (cracked), illuminated in green. Under the covering, the battery case, counter and three encryption rotors (I, II and III), plus the reversal rotor, all with matching numbers "193", with an aluminium hand wheel and the Latin letters from A to Z, below which the lamp panel. The keys in the standard QWERT sequence. The leather carrying loop and one mounting bracket have been lost. The integrated lamps were especially rebuilt for the Enigma with flat glass bulbs. Although originally designed for commercial use, the Enigma Model G was subsequently upgraded and deployed on agent missions by the Abwehr. Its compact design, without the need for a plugboard, meant that it was more portable and easier to hide, but much more complex in technical terms. As far as is known, just 20 of the approximately 350 machines supplied are still in existence. Condition: II
