Item Details
Description
A Merovingian seax with bone handle and "bear head" on the pommel, 6th - early 7th century A.D.Back half of a seax with a groove on the upper, blunt side of the blade. The tang is connected to a bone handle by two bronze rivets with humped heads. This runs straight on the top, initially bulges downwards on the underside and then retracts upwards. Towards the end of the handle it merges into a carved bear head with finely crafted details. Braided band pattern engraved in the front part between the rivets and around them. The blade has longitudinal gaps due to the effect of expanding corrosion. Thanks to restoration treatment with desalination and preservation, it is now completely stable. Length 42.2 cm. Extremely rare example of a preserved seax handle.Provenance: South German private collection, acquired in the art trade in the 1980s.Condition: III
