Artist, teacher and musician. Born Virginia Jane McAllister in Portsmouth, OH in 1912 to Fred A. and Mabel Irish McAllister, she grew up in Calgary, Alberta, Long Beach, CA and Richwood, OH, graduating from Richwood High School in 1930. She attended Pratt Institute in New York, where she received a certificate in Industrial Design in 1935. She later received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1939, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in watercolor in 1940, both at Ohio State University. After a brief teaching fellowship at the University of Arkansas, she was hired to teach at the Michigan State Normal College, later renamed Eastern Michigan University, in 1942. She taught in the Art Department at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti for 36 years, becoming interim Department head after the death of Orlo Gill, and Professor Emeritus in 1978. Jane Dart was known as a painter, sculptor and pioneer in the medium of glass and ceramic murals and panels. She had an exhibit of watercolors at the Rachham Gallery in Ann Arbor. She was exhibition chairman of the Michigan Society of Women Painters and Sculptors at the Scarab Club in Detroit. Her glass and ceramic mural of the Good Shepherd is currently installed in the Garth at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Ypsilanti. She married artist and teacher Gawaine Dart in 1950 and also exhibited in joint exhibitions with her husband throughout southern Michigan. Her last major work was an altarpiece painting, inspired by Renaissance altarpieces, which is installed in the Gardam Chapel at St. Luke's in Ypsilanti. Jane had a life-long interest in classical music. She studied piano as a child, and later, organ at EMU under Professor Goldschmidt. She served as church organist at The Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Dearborn Heights, MI for over ten years, and later played the organ at St. Luke's in Ypsilanti.
