East Asia, China, Qing Empire, ca. early 20th century Ce. A wonderful pair of figures of the bodhisattva Guanyin, each carved from chenxiang wood and depicted standing atop a pedestal in a leaning pose, hands held together, and slender body draped in flowing robes with coiffure piled atop the head and enveloped by a cascading veil. Guanyin, known outside China as Avalokiteshvara, "The Lord Who Gazes Down at The World," is often portrayed as both male or female, as seen in the soft features and androgynous body of these examples. In Buddhist belief, Bodhisattvas are among the most compassionate beings in the universe, devoting themselves to saving the suffering and helping others achieve enlightenment and Buddhahood. A few miniscule nicks to surfaces, but otherwise both are intact and excellent with impressive preservation of detail. Larger has modern foam pads attached to bottom for protection.
