Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Thailand, Mon Dvaravati Period, Sukhothai, to Ayutthaya, ca. 10th to 16th century CE. A collection of 4 pottery vessels known as kendis, each with an upturned pouring spout - two are a rich red, one is glazed green, and the third is entirely covered with white calcified encrustations. The large red and white kendi both have remains of marine mineral deposits on the surfaces suggesting that they went down with a ship - perhaps part of the Maritime Silk Road; a series of connecting trade routes between China, Southeast Asia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The white one was certainly once a great host for marine life - the additional protruding areas are indeed barnacles, shells, and coral! Size of largest: 10" L x 7.5" Diameter x 8.25" H (25.4 cm x 19 cm x 21 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010
