Description
Salvador Dali "King David" Etching W/Gold Dust, c. 1974 (Gallery Framed) - This is a limited edition original etching by Salvador Dali, one of the most groundbreaking and prolific artists of the Surrealist movement. Born Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali I Domenech in 1904 in Catalonia, Dali studied fine arts in Madrid, with a particular emphasis on Renaissance and Impressionist works. He experimented with Cubism and avant-garde styles as a new artist, before embarking upon the famous Surrealism he is most known for, exemplified by such pieces as The Persistence of Memory (1931). King David became a frequent subject of Salvador Dali during his later years. This particular etching, numbered 108 of 250, is one of the predecessors to Dali's 1975 lithograph of the warrior. This etching depicts a profile of the legendary figure with a circular crown on his head that resembles a Byzantine halo. The minimal use of color here is deliberate and deft, conjuring emotional resonance through both presence and absence, with the application of gold dust providing a regal element to the canvas. The plate used to create this piece was destroyed, further increasing the rarity and value of this unique piece. This lot includes a photo of the original certificate of authenticity issued by Beverly Hills Galleries, signed by Dianna Yaker on December 1, 1980. This professionally framed lot measures approximately 20 in x 26.5 in. Please note: The glass has a light scratch. Should the winning bidder wish, we can remove the glass or have the glass replaced at the winner's expense.
