Description
Hand-colored studio CDV portrait of an elegant woman identified as Miss E. Tenyson. [Virginia?], n.d. Period ink inscription to mount recto: "Miss E. Tenyson, Virginia". Period ink inscription to verso reads: "Miss E. Tenyson Keswick Station, Virginia." A second contemporary ink inscription follows on the mount verso: "This Picture, Snider, got in an empty house, while on the left. near Reams Station. He found it in a closet on the 2nd story. So he wishes you [accept] of it as a relic, from the seat of war. Wm. Snider. Batte[ry] [illegible] U.S. Artillery."
Several William Sniders served in the Union Army, but only one served in an artillery regiment: William Snider of Poughkeepsie, New York, who enlisted as a private on 23 December 1863 and was mustered into Company "K" of the 16th New York Heavy Artillery.
The 16th New York Heavy Artillery was involved in several engagements during the Siege of Petersburg, which is when Snider likely captured this Southern CDV near Reams Station.
An unusual wartime relic with excellent inscription.
