Item Details
Description
CSA Chesterfield Light Dragoons (Co. A, 4th South Carolina Cavalry) Written on Bible Pages.

List of Casualties in Co. A. 4th So. Ca. Cavalry. The first Cavalry Company organized in Chesterfield County, during the War between the States. [South Carolina?], after 1865. 3 manuscript pages written on disbound "Family Record" leaves from 1850 New Testament Bible.

A remarkable record of Company A of the 4th South Carolina Cavalry, identified as the Chesterfield Light Dragoons. The author writes: "This Company was originally organized in December 1861 under the name of "The Chesterfield Light Dragoons" and was mustered into the military service of the Confederate States on the 25th of January 1862. Where it was subsequently incorporated in the 4th Regiment of So Ca Cavalry it was designated as Co. A of that Regiment and continued to bear that title up to the close of the War."

The document also records the place, date, and names of soldiers who were "Killed in Battle," "Died of Wounds Recd in Battle," "Captured and Died in Prison," "killed by Accident while on duty," “Died of Disease While in Service," and "Wounded." Many of the dates of casualties correspond to 3 engagements from the Overland Campaign: the Battle Haw's Shop (Hanover County, Virginia) on 28 May 1864, the Battle of Old Church (Matadequin Creek) 2 days later, and the Battle of Trevilian Station on 11 June 1864.

Condition: some toning.
