James Lick Observatory Early "Great Telescope" Photographs
Item Details
Description
Three (3) photographs. [San Jose, California]: N.p., ca 1910.

Trio of sepia-toned photographs of San Jose, California’s James Lick Observatory and the “Great Telescope” within. These highly detailed c.1920 photos offer a unique glimpse into the early history of what was the world’s first permanently occupied mountain top observatory. Located at the summit of Mount Hamilton in the Diablo range, the site was chosen for its unusually calm nighttime air and expansive views. The telescope seen in two of the photographs dates to the late 19th century and was used in the discovery of several celestial bodies. Each photo contains a photographer's caption, which describes the subject matter.
