Description

Rather unusual 19th century/Meiji period Satsuma ceramic jar with cover, decorated on the outside with figures of 4 Chinese boys at play in different attitudes, all on a dark brown ground. Wonderful quality detailed painting - see fine depiction of their faces and hands, flow of robe lines and rich textile patterns. Very unusual feature of totally enameled background. Raised gold decoration, typical Satsuma earthenware body, beautiful finely crackled glaze. Great patina, very pleasant feel of age, some wear to the finial of the cover, overall in excellent condition. Height with cover 5 1/4 inches.
