Description
Original Bush kaleidoscope on a fancy brass plated stand. Look at a light through the viewing end and rotate the ships wheel to create visual effects from the loose items trapped in the glass. Marked C.G. Bush & Co. Prov.. R.I. Patent reissued Nov.11 1873 on the brass barrel. In overall VG condition for its age. 2 small screws that hold the brass barrel to the tube are taped in place because they are loose. Measures 15" tall In the early 1870s, Charles Bush, a Prussian native living in Massachusetts, improved upon the kaleidoscope and started the kaleidoscope fad. Charles Bush was granted patents in 1873 and 1874 related to improvements in kaleidoscopes, kaleidoscope boxes, objects for kaleidoscopes (US 143,271), and kaleidoscope stands. Charles Bush was the first person to mass manufacture his "parlor" kaleidoscope in America. His kaleidoscopes were distinguished by the use of liquid-filled glass ampules to create even more visually stunning effects.
