Lot Essay

Henri Jacob, maître in 1779.
Henri Jacob and his cousin Georges (maître in 1765) were among the most innovative chairmakers of their day as seen by these chairs. The design for these elegant fauteuils, constructed of solid mahogany with sober, restrained Neoclassical decoration and pierced backs, is inspired by both the Etruscan style and the fashionable goût anglais of the 1780's. The distinctive trellis motif was popularized by Georges and was used for chairs he supplied to Marie Antoinette's dairy at Rambouillet in 1787, see M. Beurdeley, Georges Jacob (1739-1814) et son temps, Saint-Remy en l'Eau, 2002. It was an enduringly fashionable feature during the Directoire and Consulat periods as well, and his successors supplied various superb related examples to Fontainebleau, some of which were sold Sotheby's, Paris, 12 March 2002, lot 45.
