inscribed 'AITKEN ©' (on the base) and inscribed 'ROMAN BRONZE WORKS N.Y.' (on the vertical base edge), the artist's thumb print in the bronze (on the reverse base)

Commissioned in 1920 by the New York City chapter of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, Comrades in Arms (Brothers in Arms) depicts wounded American and Canadian officers helping each other off a World War I battlefield. Aitken was a member of the fraternity and created the bronze as a memorial to the 93 fraternity members who died during the war. The bronze was sold by subscription to the 25 active chapters of Alpha Delta Phi in North America.

Condition
Bronze with brown patina. Dust in the interstices. Spots of verdigris on the base. A few scattered surface scratches on the figures and the base. No further condition issues to report.
Overall 20 x 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. On a 3 in. high veined black marble base.
