A gold pocket compass/love token,
London, 1806,
full hunter gold case, hallmarked L 18, both sides engraved with wreaths, motto 'Sed No Sine Gloria' (But Not Without Glory) and the initials EFS, the inside engraved with a spiralling inscription, Saturday 20 July 1805. Eternal Anguish is my lot, for Thy Dear sake yet true, my Heart the Needle to the Pole can never turn from you, cented by the initial H, the blue needle in the shape of Cupid's arrow with initials EFS above an enamel 32-point compass rose; in a silk lined red morocco case.

The inscription plus the arrow-shaped compass needle and the compass point for North replaced with the initial H, indicates that this gold compass was given as a token of affection from H to EFS on some occasion that occurred on the 20th July 1805.
