A rare John Miller 3-inch pocket globe, Scottish, published 1793,
cartouche printed A NEW GLOBE of the Earth By John Miller Mathematical Instrument Maker EDINBURGH 1793, the wooden sphere applied with twelve engraved and hand-coloured and un-lacquered gores showing California as a peninsula, Australia and New Zealand drawn according to Cook's discoveries, original metal handles mounted at the poles, printed and hand coloured celestial hemispheres applied to the interior of the fish skin covered case, case 3 1/4in (8 1/5cm) diameter
Footnotes:
John Miller (1746-1815) worked in the London workshop of George Adams before moving to Edinburgh in 1769. He tried to interest potential clients to buy globes by making a down payment subscription however this failed and in 1793 he published this pocket globe which proved to be a commercial success.
This pocket globe was advertised as a 'New Year's Gift of Young Ladies and Gentlemen' for the price of half a guinea.
Another John Miller pocket globe was sold in these rooms as lot 1 16th September 2009 for a hammer price of £9,500-00
