Description
A fine silver and gilt brass nocturnal, German, late 17th century,
possibly by Johann Wolfgang Hager (1645-1705), the nocturnal side shows hours 4-12-8 divided in quarters with a small finger knob at each hour, date aperture at 10 day intervals and with 5 day subdivisions, the reverse with complex volvelle with fixed outer 12 division outer scale, zodiac sign and time of sun rise and set, length of day and seasons, inner silver scale divided 1-31 with pointer that moves 10 days to set either Julian or Gregorian styles, pierced handle and finely decorated overall 4 1/5in x 2in (10 1/2cm x 5cm)
