Description
Japanese Mukozuke, Middle Edo Period, Katratsu Yaki
A mukozuke is a small plate used in the tea ceremony for sweets or light food items. This work is the product of the great Karatsu tradition. Karatsu works have always been highly esteemed as Saga in Kyushu had a great deal of trade with Korea which is the where most Japanese ceramics disciplines trace their roots. The three most respected and admired ceramics types in Japan are Raku, Hagi and Karatsu.

The previous owner of this bowl believed the motif was an “uzumaki” or swirl referencing the vicissitudes of life but the motif might actually be a “botan” or peony flower. The glaze on this work is dynamic. Within inches it goes from a shiny tan to moss green to iridescent blue / purple. 6.5cm tall and is 13.1cm across the mouth. There is a single linear gold repair to its side. The importance of Karatsu-yaki in Japanese art history can not be overstated. This piece some with a customer fitted Paulownia wood box.
2-1/2"h x 5-1/4"dia.
