Invented in 1929, the Weems Second Setting system of synchronizing to a known time signal whilst in flight was designed by Professor Philip Van Horn Weems. Weems himself was working for the US Naval Academy in Annapolis when he encountered that slight miscalculations in timekeeping could have catastrophic outcomes. By designing a bi-directional bezel marked 1-60, pilots and other navigators, were able to adjust the watch to a known time signal and make true for their destination.
