Description
Empire Mahogany Marble-top Console Table, France, c. 1800-1810. The rectangular green marble slab resting on exposed top of case, comprising two milled boards recessed in a blind-dovetailed frame with medial brace, filleted cyma recta molding applied to the front and returns, slightly overhanging mahogany-veneered apron containing frieze drawer with front heavily ornamented with cast and gilded brass scrollwork and anthemion leaves centering an escutcheon, enclosed underneath with paneled frame constructed as above, the front rail joined with double through-tenons to veneered stiles tapered to form term figure with brass hollow-casting of a Roman goddess bust over base of human feet, the rear corners raised on plain veneered pilasters, all over a shaped platform base, the top and bottom inscribed 'Rocher' in crayon, includes key, ht. 34, wd. 34 3/4, dp. 16 1/4 in.
