Description

Chippendale Walnut and White Pine Side Chair, attributed to James Graham (1728-1808) or Nathaniel Gould (1734-81), Boston or Salem, Massachusetts, c. 1770. The crest centering an arched panel intaglio-carved and incised with acanthus motif on a stippled ground, between shaped ogee scrolls ending in backswept serpentine-molded ears, tenoned with pins over tapering stiles rounded at back, flanking the pierced and chamfered owl's eye splat rabbeted to the crest and applied shoe, the trapezoidal slip-seat frame having score line inside the front rail is raised on cabriole forelegs with radial lines engraved on the cushioned pad feet, the stiles continuing to squared raking rear legs with club feet, the maple slip-seat possibly original, with later upholstery, 58cm wide, 60cm deep, 96cm high (23 1/2in wide, 24 3/4in deep, 38 1/2in high).
